The shattering of the self leads to a gradual depersonalization making us identify gradually with occasional external presences to the point that we can no longer say “I”. Masks are a means of defining our identity. Yet they are also cages from which it is difficult to free ourselves, hiding and erasing our true face. We wear layers of faces; if one is removed, not the true self is found underneath, but just another mask.
